Edmonia

by Bill Banfield

Bill Banfield

EDMONIA, by composer Bill Banfield, is based on the true story of Edmonia Lewis, a Black and Native American (Ojibwa) artist who attains an international reputation as a sculptor; and yet her life was tragically forgotten, until her most famous piece, the Death of Cleopatra (1875) is discovered, lost in a Chicago public park. Driving the narrative, is the question... what happens or what do we miss, if we don’t discover our rich cultural heritage?

The Theory of Everything, a new full-length opera exploring science, spirituality and indigenous cosmology. The opera traces the journey of a Brazilian quantum physicist who is studying fundamental connections between science and the ancient wisdom of the Q'ero Tribe in Peru. Alternating between North and South America, scenes take place inside a planetarium and at the university of Sao Paulo in Brazil, where Tomás Cabral teaches physics. His wife, Rachel, a documentary filmmaker, is exploring near-death experiences, and their daughter Cassy is a precocious 8-year-old student of astronomy. Dramatic events involving the family catapult a metaphysical and scientific search into other dimensions and alternate universes.

Encompass is looking ahead with a revitalized spirit, recharged outreach, and refreshed ideas as we look forward to the return of our Page to Stage Program, where we present new music works, and our popular PARADIGM SHIFTS, MUSIC AND FILM FESTIVAL live and in person.

We hope to soon tour our rainforest opera, ANGEL OF THE AMAZON, throughout the five boroughs. This work will feature indigenous and environmental speakers. NEW VISIONS, NEW COMPOSERS features two new works in progress, and look for our Mainstage production of THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING, a dazzling new opera set in South America and New York.
